WORKSHOP DESCRIPTIONS

Building Supervisory Relationships
If you have been promoted to a supervisory position because of your expertise, and now find yourself managing based on what you did, or did not, like in your own supervisors, this session is for you. This workshop takes the ambiguity out of being a supervisor and acknowledges the time, effort and know-how it takes to be good at the job. You will:
  • Be provided with clear and practical steps to establishing or enhancing your supervisory relationships
  • Learn how to define, communicate and elicit performance expectations and working agreements
  • Have the opportunity to explore and practice giving constructive feedback to assist staff in reaching their full potential

Performance Reviews
Mark Twain seems to have captured the sentiment of most supervisors when he said, "Like porcupines in love, most evaluations are a pain for both parties". This workshop is designed to take the pain out of the process and assist supervisors to:
  • Review performance with an emphasis on constructive language
  • Identify both accomplishments and areas for improvement and growth
  • Address performance, not personality

Dealing with the Difficult Employee: Turnaround or Termination
Few supervisory tasks are as challenging and frustrating as dealing with performance problems. Whether you are dealing with an employee who doesn't have the right skills or one whose attitude and behavior doesn't meet your expectations, your job is to provide the supervision, coaching and management to turn the situation around -- or take the necessary steps to dismiss the employee. This workshop will prepare participants to:
  • Provide coaching and constructive feedback for a variety of performance and behavioral issues
  • Develop a performance improvement plan with specific expectations and standards
  • Maintain appropriate documentation to inform the employee of issues and protect the organization
  • Determine when and how to initiate and conduct a termination

Delegation: Have I Got a Job for You
"It's quicker to do it myself." "I'll only have to do it over." "It's my job on the line." If any of these sound familiar, or if you have your own reason why delegation just doesn't work, this workshop is for you. Delegation not only allows you to be more productive, but it empowers your staff to use their skills and know-how to reach their full potential, which in turn strengthens the organization. This workshop will explore what gets in the way of successful delegation and will provide you with:
  • Concrete steps to successful delegation
  • An opportunity to practice the art of delegation
  • Ways to reap the benefits of effective delegation and ensure the necessary results

Did You Hear What I Meant to Say?
Communication -- the exchange of thoughts through speech, writing, signals, or behavior -- is critical to functioning in the workplace, yet few things seem as complex. I say one thing and you hear another. You say something and I think I know what you really mean. I talk and you hear something I didn't mean to say. I listen, but you accuse me of not really hearing. In this workshop you will:
  • Explore the common pitfalls leading to miscommunication
  • Learn how to use listening skills to further understanding and communication
  • Have an opportunity to practice saying what you really want the other person to hear

Time Management
This workshop will examine and apply time management principles to the work of nonprofit agencies, where crisis and work overload are the norm. We will examine reasons why people have difficulty managing time and will:
  • Focus on problems of procrastination and disorganization
  • Cover specific tools and techniques for planning and organizing
  • Help you to discover how to work with your personal style to plan realistically and increase productivity

Interviewing for Keeps
One potato, two potato, three potato, more. Sometimes selecting the right candidate seems as arbitrary as using one of those silly rhymes from childhood. This workshop takes the chance out of the process and lays the foundation for identifying, hiring and retaining the most qualified candidates. You will learn:
  • Steps to prepare and organize the interview
  • How to ask and probe for meaningful information -- the stuff you really want to know
  • Ways to clarify organizational values, mission and expectations
  • Legal considerations and biases that can impact the selection process
  • How to follow up the interview to ensure retention

Weathering Change: The Role of Change Agents
Change is a constant feature of both our professional and personal lives -- sometimes planned, but often taking us by surprise. And although it has been said that "change is good," for many of us change can feel bewildering and uncomfortable. When your organization, your job, or other aspects of your life change, a proactive approach can make all the difference between feeling pushed around by the experience or making it work successfully for you. This workshop will give you tools and techniques to weather the ups and downs of change, and will help you:
  • Identify your current approach to change
  • Define the states of change
  • Explore and implement tools and techniques for dealing with change
  • Take care of yourself and your organization in periods of change
  • Create a personal change management plan
  • Communicate effectively throughout the change process

Conflict Management
Conflict is a reality in our lives. When handled properly, it can lead to clarity, creativity and growth. This workshop will provide you with:
  • An enhanced understanding of the nature of workplace conflict
  • A framework for managing inevitable workplace conflict
  • An opportunity to apply concepts to actual scenarios

Personality, Styles and Differences in the Workplace
Opposites attract, right? Why is it, then, that differences in the workplace too often result in conflicts and miscommunication? We end up bumping heads, or at least scratching our heads, wondering why someone behaves in a certain way. In this workshop, participants will explore the principles behind the Myers Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) -- an assessment tool used to understand personality differences -- in order to develop ways to improve communication, resolve conflicts and benefit from the richness of different views and approaches. Participants will:
  • Have an opportunity to identify their personality type
  • Understand how personality and style differences may influence behavior at work
  • Discover ways to make constructive use of differences
