WORKSHOP DESCRIPTIONS

Building Supervisory Relationships
If you have been promoted to a supervisory position because of your expertise, and now find yourself managing based on what you did, or did not, like in your own supervisors, this session is for you. This workshop takes the ambiguity out of being a supervisor and acknowledges the time, effort and know-how it takes to be good at the job. You will:

  • Be provided with clear and practical steps to establishing or enhancing your supervisory relationships
  • Learn how to define, communicate and elicit performance expectations and working agreements
  • Have the opportunity to explore and practice giving constructive feedback to assist staff in reaching their full potential

Designing Dynamic Strategic Planning Processes
Creating an effective plan is one of the keys to organizational survival and success. In this workshop you will:

  • Learn a planning process that will help you monitor the environment
  • Select the right “business” for your agency and devise organization-wide strategies within the framework of a long-range plan
  • Tackle questions such as: “Who is involved?” and “What will the final project look like?”

Strategically Building Your Board of Directors
Every nonprofit has a unique mission and culture. An effective board of directors can be one of your most important assets—but it doesn’t just happen. You have to think strategically about your needs, develop clear expectations, recruit creatively, compete for the best volunteers, and keep them engaged. This workshop will help you:
  • Determine what your agency's unique needs are
  • Evaluate your current strengths and weaknesses
  • Be creative in finding the volunteers to meet those needs
  • Apply best practices from the field of executive search
  • Educate and involve your volunteers

Current Issues in Financial Management and Governance
Do you know what the rule-making authorities require of your organization? This workshop will include the New York State Attorney General’s requirements for not for profits as well as Better Business Bureau Guidelines. New and emerging issues will also be discussed. This session will focus on financial management concerns for executive directors, finance staff, and board members. In this workshop we will cover:

  • Best practices in financial management
  • Regulatory authorities and requirements
  • Form 990
  • Maintaining 501(c)(3) status
  • Internal control, fraud, and theft prevention
  • Topics in financial governance

Stewardship: The Art of Thanking Donors
Securing gifts from new donors is hard enough. Donors who give repeatedly and in larger amounts are key to a successful fundraising program. In this workshop, you will identify and explore:

  • Ways to thank and recognize individual donors, foundations, and corporations
  • Creative ways to keep donors involved in your organization
  • Stewardship tracking systems to ensure that your funders receive updates on how their contribution is making an impact

Write What You Mean

Are you responsible for reports, correspondence, and memos? Do you find that you inspire people when you speak, but their eyes glaze over when they read what you write? This workshop teaches techniques to convey your message in active, jargon-free language. You will learn how to:

  • Get started when you are stuck
  • Refine your message for different audiences
  • Edit your work quickly

You will participate in active writing exercises. Please bring work-related writing samples.

Meaningful Outcome Measurement
Foundations and corporations are more likely to invest in agencies that have a proven success record. Outcome measurement is a valuable tool to demonstrate how your organization has contributed to discernable changes for their clients. This workshop describes what outcome measurement is and what it is not, as well as providing an overview of its benefits. You will learn how to:

  • Use a structured logic model as a framework for identifying and measuring the outcomes of your programs and services
  • Differentiate and see the relationship between outcomes and activities
  • Develop meaningful and appropriate measures for your outcomes
