| Overview: |
Many elected officials control discretionary funds that can be allocated to support organizations and programs in their home districts.

| Details: | In this session, three nonprofit professionals will discuss their experiences in seeking, applying for, and receiving county, state and federal discretionary dollars. In addition, the session will include a “mini-clinic” where participants can brainstorm with the presenters and each other about real-life strategies for approaching elected officials.
Topics will include:
• Strategies for developing relationships with elected officials
• How to position your organization for funding
• How to build and present your case
• How to integrate this effort into your overall development, communications and advocacy agenda

| Facilitator's Bio: | FRANK ABDALE has nearly twenty years as an executive and consultant in the nonprofit sector with extensive experience in strategic planning, capacity building, policy development and fundraising – particularly in corporate, foundation and individual donor development.
As Executive Director of the Association of Nutrition Services Agencies (ANSA) from 2002-2008 Abdale built an effective advocacy program from the ground up.
He developed and introduced legislation into the House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate calling for a White House Conference on Food and Nutrition in 2010, founded the National Nutrition Collaborative, served as a member of National Anti-Hunger Organizations (NAHO), developed several policy-related publications, coordinated a grassroots and national advocacy effort, built partnerships that brought nutrition for the chronically ill into the larger worlds of senior nutrition and the anti-hunger movement, and launched a growing international program focused on nutrition and HIV/AIDS in South Africa, Namibia, Rwanda and Ethiopia.
ANDY PETERS is the Associate Executive Director of Long Island Crisis Center where he is responsible for agency fund development and overseeing youth programs. He has fifteen years experience acquiring government, private and corporate grants in the areas of HIV prevention, adolescent sexual health, LGBT youth services, and runaway/homeless youth, among others.
JOHN MAGISANO is an Organization Development Consultant specializing in nonprofit organizations. He previously served as Senior Associate for Training and Client Services for Nonprofit Connection, the Director of Technical Assistance Programs for the New York AIDS Coalition, and Development Director for the Metropolitan Community Church of NY. He has helped over 100 client organizations raise over $2.5 million from government, foundation, corporate and individual donor sources.
